As initially reported in CA, January 30th, the federal Minister of Health in Canada has introduced legislation which will delay the implementation of euthanasia (voluntary euthanasia a.k.a. Medical Assistance in Dying: “MAiD”) to those with mental illness as a sole underlying condition, till 2027.
MAiD for the mentally ill was legalized in 2021 though the implementation date has been deferred twice before. Holland patently believes that MAiD should be available for the mentally ill.
Listen to his responses from 5:20 mins where he uses extreme terms such as “trapped in mental torture”; that some are in a “horrific situation” ; that they have “exhausted all avenues.” He goes on with “intractable situation”; “mental health nightmare” and that they “should have that right…” [to be killed] It is dreadful that any minister of health could verbalize such pessimism.
The two-part response from a mental health survivor on 𝕏 / Twitter / Twi𝕏 below is simple common sense: “You don't just kill people who simply need to find the proper help. There is no such thing as "exhausting every avenue.”
Thankfully, in the current public opinion polls the “committed votes” for the Trudeau government are falling precipitously. Canadians must inform the (likely) future Conservative government that MAiD for the mentally ill must be cancelled — permanently!
Ireland beware: this is the sort of single-minded crusade you can expect once the advocates for Assisted Suicide / Euthanasia are in power.
