Catholics and Orthodox could share Easter Date by 2025

By 2025, Catholics and Orthodox could celebrate Easter at the same time.

This was revealed this week by the Patriarch of Constantinople in an interview with Turkish media.

2025 will mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Nicaean Council, leading the patriarch to comment: ‘Our objective is that in this context of the anniversary, we can find a solution in regard to Easter. The Pope has the best intentions and I think the moment has arrived, both for the Orthodox Church as well as the Catholic, to fix a common date to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. I hope that on this occasion we will be able to come to an agreement’.

It is hoped that recent disagreements between different Orthodox churches will not impede efforts to find a common date.

There are currently 220 million Orthodox Christians in the world and 1.3 billion Catholics.
