When Pope Paul VI Avoided a Holy Door Tragedy

The Holy Door has closed following the end of the Jubilee Year.

In 1974, Pope Paul VI struck the Holy Door ceremoniously with a small hammer. The workers on the opposite site were to pull it down with a pully.

When the wall began to be pulled, Pope Paul VI was still standing in front of it.

Heavy debris fell incredibly close to the pope, had it it him who knows how bad the damage would have been.

Since then, the rite has been simplified. The door is now dismantled prior to the pope opening it.
