US Bishops Speak Out About Washington Events

Following yesterday’s events in Washington DC, the president of the US Bishops Conference , Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, has released a statement.

It reads:

“I join people of good will in condemning the violence today at the United States Capitol. This is not who we are as Americans. I am praying for members of Congress and Capitol staff and for the police and all those working to restore order and public safety.

“The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of this great nation. In this troubling moment, we must recommit ourselves to the values and principles of our democracy and come together as one nation under God. I entrust all of us to the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May she guide us in the ways of peace, and obtain for us wisdom and the grace of a true patriotism and love of country.”

Earlier yesterday, Bishop Robert Barron had released a series of videos calling for peace.

The bishops are in a difficult position, they must now face an inevitably difficult 4 years ahead, with both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris having presented difficulties for the church in the past. Harris has condemned the Knights of Columbus, Biden of course is rabidly pro abortion and has even sued nuns to force them to pay for contraception.

The hierarchy have an important role but it is not the only important role, all Catholics need to pray and get active enough to turn their country towards the Catholic faith throughout the next four years and beyond.
